The Solomon R. Guggenheim is famous for its beautiful building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. But at the same time, the building is also known as one of the most difficult museum spaces to present exhibitions.

Maurizio Cattelan, New York-based Italian artist, shows us a clever but provocative solution. Instead of placing artworks in the rotunda space, he decided to hang all pieces from the ceiling in the void.

He has turned this retrospective exhibition itself into an installation artwork. It is an impressive and fun exhibition, the viewers can simply enjoy it. But it is also very like a theme park. Is it the direction toward which art museums are heading?  Individual pieces have been completely decontextualized although most of them usually had very political and controversial concepts. The show was really entertaining and worthwhile to see it, and I assume the artist definitely knew what he was doing and how this show would be criticized. Maybe he intended to make fun of or criticizing the museum by making it look like a theme park. Or simply wanted to celebrate his resignation from the job of making art?

来年1月22日まで、マウリツィオ・カテランの個展がグッゲンハイムで開催されている。

ニューヨークのグッゲンハイムは、フランク・ロイド・ライト設計のその美しい建築が有名だが、同時にその独特の形をした建物ゆえに、展示が難しいことでも知られている。そもそもアート作品は展示空間にかなり左右されるものではあるが、このかなり主張が強い建物で展示するとなると、どうやって展示するかがかなり大きな問題となってくる。良い物も悪く見えることもしばしばで、アーティストもキュレーターも皆、この建物での展示に悪戦苦闘しているようである。

ニューヨークに拠点を置くイタリア人アーティスト、カテランは挑発的な作風で知られているが、今回、カテランが考えた解決法は彼らしい奇抜なものであった。通常は螺旋状になっている展示室に作品が配置されるのだが、彼はその螺旋状展示室に作品を一切置かず、代わりに建物中央の吹き抜け部分に全ての作品を天井から吊るすという方法を考えだした（まぁ、蔡國強展などでも中央に作品を吊るすということはやっていたので、吊るすという方法自体は珍しくはないのだが）。

個展というよりは、この展覧会そのものの自体がインスタレーションアート作品となっている。作品が全て吹き抜けに吊るされているというだけでも、かなりインパクトはあるし、見応えもある。ただ、「楽しいだけ」の展覧会というのは良いのだろうか、という疑問も出てくる。あまりにテーマパークのようになってしまっているのだ。それぞれの作品は元々かなり政治性が強いものだったのだが、そうしたコンセプトや背景というものが一切失われ、ただの「奇妙な物」でしかなくなっている。まぁ、おそらくカテランはそうしたことを十分に理解した上で、あえてこうした展示にしたのだとは思うのだが。もしかしたら、今日なんでもありの美術館、特に美術界の権威でもあるグッゲンハイムという美術館を皮肉っているのかもしれない。もしくは、単に、自分の引退を（カテランは近々、美術界から引退することを表明している）祝うお祭り騒ぎをしたかったのかもしれない。
