Urbanized
a documentary film by Gary Hustwit

"Urbanized" is the third film of a documentary series called "Design Trilogy" by Gary Hustwit who is known for the first film of the trilogy "Helvetica" (I haven't seen "Helvetica" yet.)

This film, as its title, is about architecture and urban planning. It covers various urban issues over the world, including New York, Detroit, Brasilia, Beijing, Stuttgart, Mumbai... etc, and introduces us how urban planners, architects and politicians have tried to solve those problems creatively. Sometimes they could provide very successful solutions, sometimes they just created another issues. The film tells us what "urban planning" is and how designing affects people's everyday life in a city.

The film is well made and very accessible. But it is very introductory. I felt like I'm watching an "Urban Planning 101." Each of the topics discussed in the film is very complicated and some of them can be a separate subject for a feature-lenght film. I enjoyed the film but I am not sure if I was really satisfied... or I can't remember what I learned from the film newly.



デザインをテーマにした三部作の三作目である『Urbanized』（「都市的な」という意味）が現在公開されている。ちなみに2007年に制作された一作目の『Helvetica』（フォントやグラフィックデザイン、特に「ヘルベチカ」というフォントに焦点を当てた作品）は話題になった（といっても見た事ないのですが。二作目の『Objectified』は存在すら知らなかったですが。）

この作品は、そのタイトル通り、建築や都市計画をテーマとしており、世界中や各都市の抱えていた／抱えている問題に対してどのような対策が取られてきたのかを紹介し、デザインが都市生活にどのように関係し、影響を与えているのかを紐解いていく。

分かりやすく作られていて、見やすい作品ではあるけども、かなり導入的な作品であったりする。取り上げられている問題それぞれがかなり奥の深い問題であり、一つを取り上げてみても、一本の長編作品が作れるほどである。一つの問題に割り当てられている時間は10分程度であり、分かりやすくコンパクトにまとめられているものの、やはり問題の本質にまで迫る事は出来ていない気がする。映画自体は楽しんで見ることができたが、観終わった後の満足度は意外とあまりなかった。
