Sarah Sze: Infinite Line

It took so long to update this blog since the last time. I had a few unexpected problems from the end of last year and the beginning of this year, I was so preoccupied with them. One of the problems actually happened to my laptop! That's why I couldn't write anything for the blog.

Anyway. One of the exhibits I went to these days was Sarah Sze's show at Asia Society, titled "Infinite Line"

This exhibition features her new series of installations as well as some of her drawings and works on paper. 

Sze is well known for creating poetic and lyrical installations assembling everyday materials. In her works, anything - notepads, pencils, credit cards, plastic cups -  looks lively. By laying out each element carefully, she creates a unique world which mesmerizes the viewers. 

Although it was still interesting, it might be a little bit disappointing show for people who are familiar with her work. Her new works looked less ambitious than previous works. For instance the piece at her gallery show in 2010 (see my past posting) was more powerful and mysterious. Or maybe I should say, I saw more organicity in her past work while I felt the new works were rather inorganic.

On the other hand it was nice to see her drawings and works on paper, which clearly showed her basic approach to art and to the world. One trivial thing connects to another which leads to another one again, 

and those small connections create a new collective entity. 

年末から年始にかけて色々と問題が発生し、なかなかブログを更新できない状況に陥っていました。そして、やっとブログを書こうと思った矢先、パソコンに不具合が生じ、修理に出すはめに。。。とはいえ、預けるのは数日で済み、今日無事生還しました。

その間もいくつか展覧会や映画は見ていたのですが、全てを思い出しながら書くのはさすがにできないので、印象に残ったものだけ書いていきます。

アジア・ソサエティでSarah Sze（サラ・ジー）の個展が開催されている。

Szeは文房具や紙コップ、クレジットカードやレシートなど、日常に身近な物を並べたり、組み合わせたりしながら、インスタレーション作品を作るので有名なアーティストである。中国系の血を引き、ニューキョークに拠点を置いている。

彼女の作品の中に使われている物はどれも見慣れたものであるにも関わらず、まるでいきいきとして見えるから不思議である。日常品をアートへ変換させるとは、まさにこういうことなのだろか、とさえ思う。

一つの物が別の物と繋がり、それがまた別の物と繋がり、そうした小さな繋がり続くことによって、新しい集合体を作り出し、それが新たな世界を形成している。制作の過程で、思い付きのように手元にあるものを作品の中に取り込むこともあるようだが、しかし思い付きだけではここまでの作品は出来上がらない。どこまで計算されて、どこまでが偶然なのかはわからず、それがまた魅惑的でもある。

彼女の過去の作品と比べると、正直、驚きというのはない。例えば、2010年のギャラリーでの個展で発表した作品の方がもっと野心的であり、また新たな事に挑戦していたように思う（過去の記事を参照）。個人的には、前の作品ではもっと「有機的」な印象があったのに対して、今回の作品はどこか「無機的」な感じてもあった。

今回の展示会ではドローイング等の作品も併せて展示されている。インスタレーションでの彼女のアプローチが同じようにドローイングでも明確に表れていて、それはそれでかなり興味深かった。
